چکیده

This paper deals with the design of handwriting input methods for small-size mobile devices. A first input method using the isolated cursive handwritten character recognizer RESIFCar has been embedded into smartphones sold in Europe. This industrial feedback has shown the importance of the interface quality even if the associated recognizer reaches good recognition rates. Consequently, we focus our researches on the design of handwriting input interfaces for small-size devices. The originality of our works comes from the integration of the user in the interface design process with an iterative implementation-evaluation cycle. The interface quality is evaluated thanks to experiments base on the cognitive psychology framework. We present here the first iteration of the design cycle of DIGIME, the DIGital Ink Micro Editor associated to RESIFCar. We start with a quick overview of the existing handwriting input methods. Then we present our handwritten character recognizer RESIFCar and establish a set of design principles for handwriting input interfaces. After detailing the main features of the first DIGIME prototype based on these principles, we describe its evaluation. This study examines the effect of ink writer’s persistence on the screen and the effect of visual feedback contiguity. The results of this study have emphasized some problems in the implementation choices. So, we proposed a second version of DIGIME in order to improve the quality of the interface and give some hints for the future evaluation of this new prototype.

Shorthand Handwriting Recognition for Pen-Centric Interfaces

The development of shorthand handwriting recognition for pen-centric interfaces can provide the critical infrastructure for natural pen-centric interactions to enhance many pen-centric learning applications. The technical innovations include chatroom and special-symbol shorthand as well as appropriate online handwriting recognition strategies for small form-factor devices. Famous writers throug...

Recognition of Eyes-free Handwriting Input for Pen and Touch Interfaces

Continuous handwriting input using the finger on small devices such as PDAs and mobile phones is difficult if not impossible. Also, handwriting input has always required significant attention from the user during the process of writing. In our previous work, we proposed the concept of ‘eyes-free writing’, a novel solution that addresses both the problems. In this paper, we describe the challeng...

A Listening Keyboard for Users with Motor

Computer users with motor impairments find it difficult and, in many cases, impossible to access PC functionality through the physical keyboard-and-mouse interface. Studies show that even able-bodied users experience similar difficulties when interacting with mobile devices; this is due to the reduced size/usability of the input interfaces. Advances in speech recognition have made it possible t...

Non-Visual Interfaces for Wearable Computers

INTRODUCTION As computing devices drop in size and rise in power/bandwidth, novel interface techniques are needed to keep pace. Interfaces which rely on screens and keyboards/handwriting are not always effective in mobile computing scenarios. Visual displays are wasted on eyes engaged in navigational tasks such as walking or driving. Similarly, keyboards and handwriting-based interfaces are dif...

Usability evaluation of single - stroke vs . multi - stroke gesture recognition for rapid text input on small screen mobile devices

Without physical keyboard, users have to turn to key-based or stylus-based text entry device for solutions. Stylus-based handwriting interaction seems more natural. However, problems of segmentation and recognition come out [3]. (Note that since 2007’s announcement of the iPhone, and widespread adaptability of capacitive touchscreens, stylus has gradually been replaced by finger-touch user inte...
